The Tip Question Everyone Secretly Asks

Megan loved getting her nails done, at least at first. Walking into the salon always felt relaxing. The soft music, the colors on display, and the feeling of leaving with perfectly done nails made her feel good every single time. But after a while she started noticing something else. By the time she paid for everything, she always left with the same uncomfortable feeling. The original service cost one amount, then there were extras, upgrades, and finally the question that appeared at the end — the tip. Suddenly the total felt much bigger than she expected.

At first she thought she was the only person thinking that way. She worried that asking questions about tipping would somehow make her seem rude or cheap. So instead of asking, she quietly kept doing what many people do. She guessed. Some days she tipped one amount, other days a different amount. Every visit somehow ended with her staring at the payment screen for a few awkward seconds while silently wondering if she was making the wrong choice.

Eventually curiosity finally won. One afternoon she casually asked friends what they normally did. To her surprise, almost nobody gave the same answer. One friend said she always tipped a percentage. Another said she tipped more if someone spent extra time on detailed work. Someone else admitted they had spent years feeling confused too. Suddenly Megan realized there wasn’t some secret rule everyone knew except her. A lot of people had quietly been wondering the exact same thing.

She even asked a salon worker one day, expecting some complicated answer. Instead the woman smiled and laughed softly. “Most people stress way too much over it,” she said. “People usually tip around fifteen to twenty percent if they’re happy with the service, but kindness and respect matter too.” Megan sat there surprised because she had spent years treating the situation like some impossible math problem she had to solve perfectly.

From that day on Megan stopped leaving salons feeling anxious. She realized that people often pressure themselves into believing there is one perfect answer for everything. Sometimes there isn’t. Sometimes people are all secretly asking the same question while pretending everyone else already knows the answer. And sometimes the thing causing stress isn’t the bill itself — it’s feeling afraid to ask.
